What is Chiropractic and what does a Chiropractor do?

Chiropractors are Doctors of Chiropractic, highly trained practitioners that undergo intense training of 4-5 years in adjusting techniques, Musculoskeletal, clinical medicine, orthopaedic and neurological testing and theory. Chiropractors look for the root cause of the health issue and correct misalignments of the spine that are affecting the function of the nervous system and causing interference to the nerve pathways that feed the whole body. In essence, chiropractors put your bones and joints back into their natural place so you can move better, and your nervous system and muscles can function properly, reducing pain and allowing you to function at your optimum. Chiropractors will look to help you establish a healthier working body, working on prevention and wellbeing and referring to other health professionals if they feel there is a requirement for imaging or further assistance on other factors such as nutrition or mental wellbeing and health.

Do I need to bring anything to my initial consultation appointment?

If you have had any imaging such as X-rays, MRIs or any scans, please bring those, with you as this will help us build your medical history profile of you.

Medications – Please bring a list of all medications you currently take including the dosage, if possible, If you have taken steroids in the past, then please tell us this information at the time of your consultation.

What do I need to wear to my appointment

Please come dressed comfortably, loose clothing is best.

What Chiropractic technique do you use?

Biggleswade Chiropractor uses the McTimoney technique, due to its precision and effectiveness at adjusting the body. The technique is carried out by highly trained chiropractors with the main focus being on the spine and the pelvis, if there is a requirement to adjust other areas of the body, then this technique allows the chiropractor to do so.

Where do I go when I arrive for my appointment

When you come for your appointment, there is a reception area where you can wait until you are called for your appointment. If the door to reception is locked, please kindly wait outside or in your vehicle until your appointment time.

What should I expect during my first chiropractic visit?

At our clinic we carry out an initial examination and this involves a thorough health check to include:

Your history – we will take a thorough history from you to understand your lifestyle, current complaints, how it is affecting your lifestyle and any previous medical history including current medications.

Observation – we look at your current posture how your musculoskeletal structure is presenting.. We check your skin and muscle tone for areas of the body also to give us an indication of your overall presentation.

We assess and check the alignment of your spine and pelvis, plus and other joint we feel may need to be considered.

Vitals: Blood pressure, pulse, respiratory rate.

We will carry out a thorough Abdominal, cardiovascular, respiratory and lymphatic system screening as required.

Neurological testing – we test all reflexes, sensory and motor patterns in your body to ensure these are functioning correctly or to see where there is underlying interference.

Orthopaedic testing – special tests tell us which muscles and joints require attention and adjusting.

In your next appointment your report of findings will be presented to you.

Is chiropractic care safe?

Chiropractic care is very safe, our chiropractors are registered and regulated under the General Chiropractic Council GCC and undergo intense training.


Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor?

You do not need a referral; chiropractors are often recommended by other health professionals, but a referral is not required.


Will I feel sore after a chiropractic adjustment?

It is possible to feel some mild soreness for a short time after adjustments, especially if this is your first time or you have significant muscle tension around the areas that have been adjusted, however many report that the benefit of improved mobility, function and immediate relief outweighs any soreness that is felt after being adjusted.

What is the difference between chiropractic care and physiotherapy

Chiropractic care focuses on spinal health and nervous system function, using adjustments to mobilise joints and place the bones back into alignment, while physiotherapy often involves exercises and rehabilitation.

How long will it take to feel better?

This will vary depending on the condition and individual response to care.

What should I do if I miss an appointment?

Your appointments can easily be managed via your Vagaro profile, please ensure you give no less than 24 hours’ notice if you need to reschedule your appointment, this is to ensure you do not receive a charge for the late cancellation.
